Out of the Mouths of Babes

Posted by Luke Lundell on

I was reading a book and the chapter was talking about how we rarely see greatness and goodness combined. Psalm 8 is an amazing Psalm, a prophetic Psalm, of how God in His greatness chose to come to us and save us. Verses 4-6 are referenced in Hebrews 2:6-8 speaking of Jesus as the Davidic king (please read it!). What got my attention was vs. 2; “Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.” So I looked over to my almost 4 month old daughter and listened to what was coming out of her mouth. You can only imagine. She's just started to babel and squeal. To me it doesn't sound very strong, however David writes in Psalm 8 that because of God's foes and to still the enemy and the avenger, God has established strength (shown His power and glory) from what comes out of babies and infants' mouths.

It's amazing! Something so tiny and helpless (and seemingly insignificant in today's culture), but yet created in the image of God Himself, (Gen. 1:27) can display His Glory! We can look to the heavens and stars and galaxies to see the work of God in His vastness, and yet He was mindful of us sinners and sent His Son to make a way for us to be with Him for all eternity. It's very, very humbling. God shared His greatness with us, to make His name great.

Here is John Calvin's comment on Psalm 8:2, “declaring, that the providence of God, in order to make itself known to mankind, does not wait till men arrive at the age of maturity, but even from the very dawn of infancy shines forth so brightly as is sufficient to confute all the ungodly, who, through their profane contempt of God, would wish to extinguish his very name.”

Isn't that so true of the culture we live in today? Seeing a baby born is one of the most amazing things a person can ever see here on this earth. The miracle of birth; however Satan has crept in and planted lies that babies in the womb aren't humans but embryos, that it's the mothers (or fathers) choice to decide the outcome of the pregnancy, and the list goes on. Just think of the millions of babies who were about to display God's glory out of their mouths who have been murdered here in America. It's sickening when you think about it. But that's what we need to do. Think. It's too easy to turn the other way when we hear the news about planned parenthood and the even more grotesque things that are being exposed in the past few months of them harvesting and selling bodies and body parts. But that's what Satan would want; Christians to get a little disturbed about it, but then just continue on their merry way like they never heard a thing. It's uncomfortable to think about, and it should be. We are so desensitized as a culture.

So what do we do? Pray; that's the obvious one. Pray that hearts will change, that the gospel will be spoken and God's glory displayed to the individuals who have authority over these clinics. It says in 2 Cor. 4:6 “In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” Pray for the veil to be lifted so they will be able to see the glory of Christ.

We also need to get involved. We have a planned parenthood clinic in our own backyard, Bemidji. But thank God we have a pregnancy care center in Bemidji also. Northwoods Pregnancy Care Center. A place that actually cares for the women they serve. Give them a call. I'm sure they have tons of needs. I know they are trying to raise money for infant car seats. That's one of the biggest needs right now.

Another way to get involed is through foster care and adoption. I heard it said once that abortion will truly start to be challenged when the church starts to care for the orphans. Prayerfully consider it. Don't just brush it off and say it's not for us, or we're too old, or too busy, or we can't afford it. Please consider it. Ask God how you can care for the orphans in the world, the orphans in our own backyard.

So, next time you hear a baby's cry, remember that it is one of the many ways God displays His strength and amazing greatness. It's not just babel and squeals, it's evidence. And remember that EVERYONE is created in the image of God and has a purpose.

O LORD, our lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

All for His Glory!
